Novel Update

Novel Update

One of my goals for this blog is to use it to keep everyone up to date on what’s going on with my novel.  As many of you know, I completed the first draft of my fantasy story at the end of November.  I read a lot of advice about what to do next, but the prevailing theory was to put it away for a bit, work on something else, then come back to it fresh.  So I set it aside for about three weeks.  During my break from school, I spent some time re-reading it and editing the first couple of chapters.  I was lucky enough to get some great feedback from my first round of readers, so I knew a bit of what the problems were that I needed to address.

I also spent that time reading some books on the editing process and what I needed to be looking for on my own.  After working through the first draft, I have discovered that I love adverbs and passive verbs.  I’m also a big fan of past-perfect verbs.  So I have a lot to do.

I have also been in contact with an editor.  One thing I read over and over was find a professional editor.  While I value the opinions of my first readers, they are friends of mine and possibly enjoy the book because I wrote it.  I need someone who will be unbiased in their opinion of my work.  She has read the short story I posted here and has agreed to edit it for me.  She said she’ll take it at the first of February.  Right now, the month is nearly half over, and I’m about a quarter of the way through my edits.  YIKES!  I have a lot of work to do.

Stay turned for more updates on how it’s going.  Fingers crossed I’m done in time to get it to my editor.
